iPad an “entertainment device”?

No other device sees a heavy increase of use during the weekends, showing that the iPad is used as an entertainment device and differs from both smartphones and browsers.

Interesting charts here, showing that iPad use swells during off-work hours. But I’m not sure I buy the conclusion that the “iPad is used as an entertainment device.”

That may be true, but it doesn’t necessarily follow from the data. Here’s another theory: iPad use spikes during leisure hours because people want to compute in comfort. Knowledge workers spend long days chained to their desks, hunched over keyboards, squinting through the fluorescent glare. When they get home, they want to escape all that–without sacrificing their connectivity. They want a couch computer.

The iPad fits the bill.
